Course Description
This introductory course will cover a variety of musical genres from selected cultures in the Americas and Africa.  The course has three main objectives: 1) to broaden our understanding of the scope of human musical activity throughout the world; 2) to develop listening skills and a vocabulary that will enable us to talk about and write about music; 3) to study music in culture as the relationship between ideas, sound, and behavior. The broad cultural areas selected to receive primary focus this semester are North America (Native America, African America, and Anglo-America), the Caribbean (Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago), Latin America (Mexico, Venezuela), South America (Brazil and Argentina), and Africa (Mande, Akan, Ewe, Shona & Zulu).  Musical genres include, but are not limited to court, ritual, popular, and narrative traditions. Lectures will be supplemented with guest speakers/artists, demonstrations, and audio-visual presentations.
