Trio Contraste
William
Terwilliger, violinist
Martha MacDonald, clarinetist
Andrew Cooperstock pianist
Acclaimed for its
'tight ensemble, fine sense of interplay and balance among the three
instrumental voices, and a spirit of pure fun that is infectious,' Trio
Contraste has presented concerts and master classes for a dozen years
in such diverse venues as Nice, Brussels, Kiev, Lviv, Berlin, The
Hague, Riga, Linköping, Houston, Tulsa, and Detroit.
Its mission to
promote contemporary American music across the U. S. and abroad, the
group is frequently in demand to premiere and record works by such
established composers as Robert Starer, Paul Schoenfield, Donald
Grantham, Dan Welcher, Kathryn Mishell, Carolyn Bremer, and Emma Lou
Diemer.
Education also plays a significant role for Trio Contraste. As
distinguished teachers, its members have presented master classes and
workshops throughout this country and in Australia, Latin America, and
Europe. Recent clinic topics have included Chamber Music of Aaron
Copland, Getting the Word Out: Marketing for Musicians, Chamber
Music of Lowell Liebermann, and Celebración Latina. With a keen
interest in helping the next generation of young musicians, master
classes and lectures have been presented at the Juilliard School (New
York), Northwestern University (Chicago), University of Texas (Austin),
Brevard Music Center (North Carolina), University of Colorado
(Boulder), University of South Carolina (Columbia), National Music
Academy of Ukraine (Kiev), the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler
(Berlin), Université de Nice (France), Université Blaise Pascal
(France), University of Aberdeen (Scotland), University of Linköping
(Sweden), and Queensland Music Teachers Association (Australia), among
many others.
As the name suggests, Trio Contraste is noteworthy for its variety of
sounds and repertoire and is comprised of award-winning chamber players
from three different geographical regions (South Carolina, Colorado,
Texas). Violinist William Terwilliger, pianist Andrew Cooperstock, and
clarinetist Martha MacDonald have been praised by such publications as
Strings, The Strad, American Record Guide, Le Monde, and the
International Clarinet Society, and invited as guests of such
international music festivals as Festival Contrasts (Lviv),
International Festival-Institute at Round Top (Texas), Australian
Festival of Chamber Music (Queensland), Festival de Melle (France),
Brevard Music Festival (North Carolina), Chautauqua Music Festival (New
York), Aspen Music Festival (Colorado), Intersections 2000 (Toronto),
Piccolo Spoleto (South Carolina), and Mu Phi Epsilon International
Conference. They have also been invited to perform for U. S. Embassies
in Frankfurt, Kiev, Canberra, Lima, La Paz, Quito, Panama, Santiago,
and Nassau and on National Public Radio, Radio France, Radio Latvia,
Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and the BBC.
