Textbooks:
Kostka, Stephan and Dorothy Payne. Tonal Harmony with an Introduction to Twentieth Century Music. Fifth Edition. McGraw-Hill Inc., 2004.

Materials:
Manuscript paper, pencil, eraser.

A knowledge of the fundamentals of music -- scales, rhythms, melody, harmony -- is absolutely necessary for developing musical literacy. In addition, the awareness of how music is put together informs and improves our performing, practicing, and listening strategies. (Obviously, meaningful composition is impossible without these skills.) This knowledge and experience allows each of us to engage music on a deeper level. We’ll spend the year addressing those elements that can enhance our musicianship. While most of the music we will study comes from the period of composition between ca. 1700-1900 (the “common practice period”), the same elements of harmony provide the constituent components for many other types of music, including rock and jazz.

This is course is designed as a review of tonal harmony focusing on those elements of chromaticism that are covered in the third semester of a four semester undergraduate core theory course. We will cover chapters 16 - 24 of the textbook, devoting about three classes per chapter. Elements to be covered include chromatic harmony and voice leading, as well as musical form and performance. A general working knowledge of the first fifteen chapters in the text will be assumed. If you feel you are weak on this material, either brush up (if you are rusty), or see me (if you are confused). Please do not hesitate to see me or one of the theory TAs if you need help. Plan on spending at least 30 minutes a day reading and reviewing the material: since the material is cumulative it is important that you do not get behind.

4101 Spring 2006

Grading:

Homework = 45%
Homework will be assigned once a week and will be due at the beginning of class. No late work will be accepted. If you are going to be absent the on a day when an assignment is due, make arrangements to have the work turned in by someone else, a friend, perhaps. If you are feeling confused or lost, please make an appointment to see me or one of the TAs.

Exams = 45%
There will be four tests, including the final. All four exams will take place during class times on the following dates:
Test #1: Wednesday 2/13; #2 Wednesday 3/13; #3 Wednesday 4/17; #4 Monday 5/8 4:30 pm (final exam)
Make sure to be in class during these times. No make-ups will be given unless arranged at the beginning of the semester.

Class Participation/attendance = 10%
Attendance will be taken each class session. More than    three absences will lower your grade by a partial letter (A becomes A-, etc.) and your absence record will be reported to the undergraduate dean. If you miss a class, make sure to get the material from a classmate. If you become seriously ill or have a personal emergency, stay in touch to make the necessary arrangements.

ERRATA FROM FOURTH EDITION

Kostka/Payne, 4th Edition

Errors found before 11/24/99

Textbook

p. ix   The first line should say "fourth,ë not "fifth.ë

p. 13   The c harmonic minor scale at the bottom of the page is spelled
wrong. It should have a B-natural, not a B-flat.

p. 14   The c melodic minor scale at the top of the page is spelled wrong. It
should have an A-natural, not an A-flat, and a B-natural, not a B-flat.

7 lines from the bottom it should read, "c minor and Eb major are said to
be relatives,ë not "c minor and Eb minor are said to be relatives.ë

p. 22   The line of music in Part B should have a treble clef, not a bass
clef.

p. 34   The reference to Exercise 2-3 should be to Exercise 2-2.

p. 37   The reference to Exercise 2-4 should be to Exercise 2-3.

p. 43   The reference to Exercise 2-5 should be to Exercise 2-4.

p. 47   In Example 3-3 there are two errors. (1) The third chord (minor
seventh) has a minor triad, not a major one; (2) the last chord (diminished
seventh) has a diminished 7th, not a minor one.

p. 51   In Example 3-8 the key signatures should agree: two sharps on each
staff.

p. 53   Example 3-10 needs a CD logo.

p. 54   Chord 4 in the Easter Oratorio example should have a figured bass
symbol of a 6 with a slash through it (as on p. 51, m.3)

p. 56   The second paragraph should begin, ^"The chord in Example 3-13ë, not
^"The chord in Example 3-12ë.

The sentence between Examples 3-13 and 3-14 should refer to Example 3-13,
not 3-11.

p. 72   Exercise C.1 lacks the blanks and numbers (1 through 10) beneath the
exercise.

p. 95   In the last paragraph, the first line should read "doubled rootë, not
^"double rootë.

p. 107  The sentence beginning ^"The sequence in the Handel excerpt...ë must
come out, as well as the series of roman numerals beneath it: I - IV - ii - V
- etc.

p. 116  Second line under "Differences in the Minor Modeë should not have
upper case after the colon. Is this a new McGraw-Hill style issue? Dorothy
says she noticed these elsewhere as well.

p. 127  In Example 8-6, the ii is a ii6.

p. 147  In Example 9-5, the ii-r should be a 20q.

p. 161  Under "conclusive cadences,ë the "inë under PAC should be in the
right hand column.

p. 162  Under "progressive cadences,ë the "inë under "Phrygian HCë should
be
in the right hand column.

p. 166  This one is the worst of all. After the word "tableë at the end of
line 3, all of p. 162 from 3e is missing. The text makes no sense here since
there is no table, and the next sentence makes no sense either because
"periodë has not been defined.

For now, I suggest removing the sentence, "All the cadences...tableë and
inserting the heading and the text from the bottom of 3e p. 162.

p. 178  In the table, restore the horizontal line between "Retardationë and
"Appoggiatura.ë

p. 195  At the bottom of the page, the parenthetical expression should be
"(also called a cambiata or "changing tonesë)ë, and it should appear in the
next line, after neighbor group.

p. 223  On line 6 two figured bass symbols are overprinted. The first should
be a 4 over a 3, the second a 4 over a 2.

p. 242  In Example 15-4, the second chord is V7, not V.

p. 245  In Example 15-11, the first bass note is A2, not G2.

p. 257  Violin I, 3rd complete measure, the first F should be preceded by a
sharp.

p. 269  In the Mozart example, last complete measure, the right hand of the
piano part has beats 2 and 3 reversed.

p. 273  The last exercise should have an ^"e:^ë below the bass clef staff.

p. 283  The measure number ^"45^ë should be on the previous measure.

p. 343  The dynamics are cut off in the music at the top of the page.

p. 351  The low C(#) is cut off in the penultimate measure.

p. 363  Seven lines from the bottom should have iio, not ii¯, and ii¯7, not
iio7.

p. 365  In the Bach example, the key is C, not G. But the key signature is
correct.

p. 366  The measure number (47) is cut off above the first measure.

p. 372  Ex. 22-2c is missing the six-four symbol

p, 394  At the beginning of m. 2 a courtesy accidental is needed on the G# in
the treble clef.

p. 403  A bracket and a V is needed under the i6/4 V at the bottom of the
page.

p. 406  In Ex. 24-7, the last 16th in beat 3, r.h., should be B, not G#.

In Ex. 24-8, m. 3, the notes on beat 3, r.h., shoud be G and F, not Bb
and Ab.

The first measure of Example 24-8 is m. 44, not 34.

p. 410  In Exercise A,10, remove the flat before the first alto note.

p. 419  In Ex. 25-8.d, it should be A#, not G#.

p. 424  In m. 3 of Exercise 2, the last note should be D#, not D natural.

p. 501  Only exercises 1 and 3 should have a key signature of one sharp. The
others have no key signature.

p. 502  Exercises 7 and 8 should have no key signature.

p. 609  In the first answer (D.1), the second bass note should be F3, not D3.

p. 654  At the bottom of the page, keys and roman numerals are missing for #3
and #4:

    #3   b:  Ger+6 = C:  V7      #4    e:  V7/iv = g#:  Ger+6

p. 674  It"s "Hensel, Fanny Mendelssohnë, not "Hensel, Fanny Mendelsohnë

Workbook

p. 22   Chord 9 should be Mm7, not MM7.

p. 33   In Exercise A, #8 should have a treble clef, not an alto clef.

p. 34   In the exercise at the bottom, there should be 8 blanks but there are
only 7.  Two of them are merged into one big blank in the second measure.

p. 44   The first roman numeral should be ii, not Ii.

stem.

p. 45   Exercise B.3 should have a key signature of one sharp.

p, 50   Missing ^"3  four partsë

The key signature for the bottom system is wrong. It should be 1 flat,
not 3 sharps.

p. 55   In part A, remove the second blank in #^"s 2, 4, and 5

p. 80   In Exercise 4, m. 7 (3rd measure of the example), the last chord in
the right hand should read, from bottom up, as A, C, F#.

p. 87   In Exercise 2, the fermata is missing over the treble clef in m. 1.

p. 125  L.H. should begin with treble clef.

p. 128  The instructions should refer to pp. 248-250, not 186-187.

p. 138  Vla, 2nd system: There should not be one long slur (actually a bowing
indication) in the first 2 measures, but 2 shorter ones.

p. 140  2nd system, 1st measure, Vc, the last note should be C, not Bb.

p. 142  In Part D, No. 9, the key should be ^"e:^ë, not ^"E:^ë.

p. 154  The 3rd staff at the beginning of the excerpt should begin with a
treble clef.

p. 156  The exercise should have a ^"2^ë above it.

At the end of measure 2, the natural sign should be next to the 6, not
