Related Experience

2000 - Director, The Colorado Diversity Initiative, University of Colorado Leading a $5M NSF-funded diversity initiative to recruit, retain and integrate graduate students from socioeconomic groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences and engineering.

1996 - Associate Professor, University of Colorado at Boulder.
Principal investigator for an externally funded graduate research program in applied environmental microbiology. Lecture instructor for courses on introductory environmental engineering, wastewater treatment engineering, and environmental microbiology.

1994/95 Visiting Postdoctoral Researcher, University of California at Berkeley.
Lead independent research to apply direct quantitative microscopy and biochemical assays to evaluate enhanced and intrinsic in-situ bioremediation in hydrocarbon and solvent contaminated soils. This work were used for environmental risk assessment for closure and reuse of the Alaeda Naval Air Station on San Francisco Bay, CA.

1993/94 Wastewater Microbiologist, David Jenkins and Associates, Kensington,CA. Subcontract consulting: process troubleshooting using direct microscopic identification of filamentous microorganisms in activated sludge.

1989/94 Civil Engineer, City and County of San Francisco.
Responsible to the Engineering Bureau for in-house process engineering and research projects for the City's main wastewater treatment facilities. Full-time member of the start-up team for the state-of-the-art 65 MGD Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant.

1988/89 Engineering Research Assistant, City of San Mateo Water Quality Control Plant (SMWQCP). Fundamental research investigating Nocardia (foaming) control with anoxic selectors. Produced preliminary design of anoxic selector basins for the SMWQCP expansion.

1986/88 Environmental Engineer, Oro Loma Sanitary District (OLSD)/CH2M Hill Inc., Oakland, CA. Served as liaison and staff engineer to CH2M Hill, Inc. for the Oro Loma Sanitary District expansion. Built and calibrated a comprehensive FORTRAN model of the OLSD collection system for the District's master plan and I/I study. Wrote the Operations and Maintenance Manual for the OLSD Water Pollution Control Plant following the 1980 expansion.
