Dr. Hertzberg is currently Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CU-Boulder. She studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan (B.S. Magna Cum Laude 1981), and the University of California at Berkeley (M.S. 1983, Ph.D. 1986.) Following her Ph.D., she worked as a research associate in the Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Southern California. She has been at the University of Colorado since January 1991.

Her research interests center around pulsatile, vortex dominated flows with applications in both combustion and bio-fluid dynamics. Three dimensional flows and passive and active fluid control techniques are of particular interest. She has received research funding from NSF, ONR, NASA and the Whittaker Foundation.

Dr. Hertzberg teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in measurement techniques,  thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, design and computer tools. She has pioneered a spectacular new course on flow visualization, co-taught to engineering and fine arts students with Prof. Alex Sweetman.  Dr. Hertzberg has welcomed undergraduate independent study teams into her research program, supervising up to 12 students each semester.

Dr. Hertzberg is Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Committee.. She is a member of the ASEE, the Combustion Institute, the American Physical Society, Tau Beta Pi, the American Association of University Women and AAUP, and is the faculty advisor of the Boulder Pi Tau Sigma chapter. She is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. In addition, she participates in numerous outreach activities, including 'Expanding your Horizons', a national program aimed at exposing young women to nontraditional careers.
