half-hour recital, graded by the
major professor.**
Senior year:
Three additional semester hours,
which may be covered by the Keyboard Harmony class; no exam.

Freshman Jury:
A contrapuntal piece; a
sonata-allegro movement; two additional contrasting pieces; major and
minor
(three modes) scales to three sharps and three flats, arpeggios in root
position. Scales: four octaves in sixteenths, mm quarter =
96-116.
Arpeggios: four octaves, triplets, with reasonable fluency. A
repertoire list
of at least 45 minutes of music, subject to the discretion of the major
professor should be submitted at the time of the jury, including works
studied
during the previous two semesters and not limited to those presented at
the
jury.
Sophomore Jury:
A minimum of 45 minutes of music
with important works representing at least four style periods; a
repertoire
list; all major and minor (three modes) scales, arpeggios in root
position,
first and second inversions. Tempo and distance as above. *
All BM piano students
will also be required to prepare an
ensemble work, approved by the faculty and coached by a faculty member,
to be
presented in a graded jury. This may be presented as part of the
requirements
of Independent Accompanying, chamber music, or piano 4-hands course
work. This
requirement should normally be fulfilled at some time before the
presentation
of the junior recital.
Junior year: A
half-hour recital, graded by the
major professor.**
Senior year: A
one-hour recital in Grusin Music
Hall, with Preview; graded by a committee of at least 2 keyboard
faculty members.**
Graduate Students
Graduate students are
required to present a jury at the end of their first semester in
residence to show that they are ready to proceed to thesis (recital)
projects. Generally, students should present works representing at
least three contrasting styles (single movements of large works are
acceptable).
*Self-prepared
projects of smaller or larger scope are encouraged within the studios,
and may
be presented as part of the jury at the discretion of the major
professor.
**Students
are encouraged to explore and present contemporary repertoire as part
of the
junior and/or senior recitals.
