Project Title:
CU African Ensemble Performs With Platt Middle School's Wind Symphony and Community Outreach at the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts, Lafayette

Project Description;
The project aims to demonstrate the role of music in African cultures and the relationship between music and other arts by rehearsing and performing (on 11/14/01) with Platt Middle School Wind Symphony and the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts in Lafayette on April 12, 2002.

Role of Director:

• Teach members of CU African Ensemble the repertoire
• Teach students of Platt Middle School percussion arrangements
• Co-ordinate activities of project
• Direct performances of CU African Ensemble at Platt Middle School
• Direct Performances of CU African Ensemble at Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts, Lafayette

Primary Goal:

• To enrich musical lives of K-12 kids in Colorado Community and audiences in Lafayette and surrounding areas
• To raise awareness of the role of music in African cultures and relationship between music and other arts
• K-12 kids will have opportunity to perform with college students

How Does Project Comply With Colorado Dept. of Education Standards for K-12 Education?

• Platt  Middle School Students will play wih CU African Ensemble in varied repertoire of music
• Students will perform on non-pitched and pitched intruments
• Students will create and improvise music
• Students will listen to, analyze and describe music
• Students will understand relationship between music and other arts in Africa
• Students will understand music in relation to culture

Schedule of Outreach Programs: Spring 2002

• April 12, Concert at Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts, Lafeyette, 7:00 pm
• Lecture-Demo for two Assemblies at Casey Middle School
• March & April, Director and CU students will go to Casey Middle school once a week to teach them how to play African drums
• April 25, Concert at Casey Middle School, Boulder

• April 7th, 2002. 2nd Annual African Ensemble Concerty, Grusin Hall, College of Music, 2 pm
• April 12, 2002. Concert at The Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts, Lafeyette, 7 pm
• April 13, 2002. Performance at the CU-Boulder International Festival, UMC, 2pm
• April 25, Concert at Casey Middle School
