This is a selection from
the series of casein paintings on paper, created in 1990.
They are all 14"x 8"
on illustration board.
They are portraits of imaginary
persons, rather in the way novelists or dramatists create characters
in their work. They are not people I know or have known, yet
each has a convincing individuality; they also may remind viewers
of actual people they know.
I appended to each portrait
a very brief biographical notation which hints at some aspect
of the person's personality - as I attempted to "read"
it from the visual evidence. The way, say, you might create in
your mind a brief life story for a stranger with whom you are
sharing an elevator.
Some of these imaginary people
appear, in larger, near life size, version in the
oil paintings and black
and white prints sections.
