Writing on Science and Society

This course uses a variety of material, from Bill Joy's recent article in Wired magazine, "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us," to Stanley Kubrick's cinematic critique of nuclear proliferation, "Dr. Strangelove," as the starting points for critical essays on science and society. Additionally, each student will write a grant proposal based on her own scientific research. The students' primary goal for this last project will be to make their (often complex) research intelligible to scientists in other fields, and even to a non-scientific audience.
