This fourth-year college French literature survey deals with

19th-century fiction, poetry and theatre. It will focus on

changes and developments in French writing, both in subject

matter and style, throughout the century. The goal of this

course is to familiarize advanced undergraduates with the canon,

or currently most esteemed authors of 19th-century France, and

with works that are considered to be representative of each

author. The reasons these authors are now considered important,

and possible contrasts with their reputation in their own time

will be one focus of discussion. The works will be studied in

chronological order, as examples of the major literary movements

of the century, with emphasis on observing the effects of

political and social change in France on its literature.

The class will be conducted as a seminar. Students will make

frequent class presentations, including oral readings of poetry.

Students will acquire a certain number of theoretical skills, centering on the analyse de texte, and learn the techniques and vocabulary of literary analysis. They will write a number of small papers, the last of which will be an in-class open-book essay on the day of the final exam. No work of any sort will be accepted after the due date without a medical excuse.

This is a course with a great deal of reading. Students should

expect to spend a minimum of nine hours a week on class

preparations, particularly reading certain very long novels, and

should organize their work and study schedules accordingly. The

course will be graded 80% on class preparations and participation, including written homework assignments, quizzes and presentations by teams of students. The last 20% of the

grade will be the final, in-class essay. All work is in French, and students can expect to write approximately twenty pages of

essays during the semester.

Seniors intending to use this course as their Senior Seminar and

to write their Senior Essay as part of the coursework should

state their intentions in writing by September 16, 1992 in a

letter to the instructor.
