LISTENING: (30 points)
Brief excerpts of listening examples will be played with two or more questions for each. All examples are from the Malm CD, selections 1-11. Be prepared to answer questions relating to classification, use/function, instruments (know the names of all the major instruments we have studied) or basic formal elements of the music.

Be prepared to answer questions concerning information from the following sections:
Keys to Understanding Japanese Arts: know the main religions influencing the arts.
Music and Japanese History: know musical/historical periods up to Tokugawa/Edo.
Shinto Music: be familiar with the main types of kagura.
Buddhist Music: be familiar with importation of Buddhist chant and its development.
Gagaku: know the origins, types of instruments and their musical functions.
Biwa: know the main types gaku-, moso-, heike-biwa.
Noh: know the origins; main musical features; instruments of the noh hayashi.
